Forget Broadband -- Get BroadLAN'd! : The Belkin Cable/Router

byunheimlich Nov 28, 2002

Pros cheap!, fast, easy to setup, a breeze to administer
Cons can hit bumps in road when updating admin options; cables could be costly
Recommended it? Yes

I'm a huge proponent of broadband. If you've got cable TV, you've probably already got all you need except for a broadband modem and a one-time visit from the cable company. But once you get online with the speed and bandwidth of cable access, you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

Pros "Idiot-proof" setup utilities that actually are! Cheap. Easy. I like that.
Cons Software not compatible with Win2K.
Recommended it? Yes

She's good-looking, cheap, easy, and fast.

But I'd still take her home to Mom. The Belkin 4-Port Cable/DSL Gateway Router was everything the package promised. Easy setup, fast throughput, and even stylish. I'm happy as a clam, but I expected to be: it's Belkin.

I have an ATT cable modem broadband connection with 2 computers. I was using a Linksys hub and had 2 IP addresses so that my son and I could surf the Internet at the same time. I didn't like the thought of paying $5.00 month for a second IP address but always thought that a router was too... Read full review »

Pros Piece of cake to integrate
Cons Strange way to access security log
Recommended it? Yes

Belkin's web site lists this router for $119, but I just picked one up this week for only $49.99 (+ S&H) from TigerDirect.com so I don't think I could have made a better choice for the money. I had a fully functional network at home based on Windows ICS, but I didn't want to have to have the host... Read full review »

"Help! I'm a cool little switch trapped with mediocre firmware!"

Pros Cheap, works well (when it's working)
Cons Buggy firmware, Limited port-mapping behavior, Unexplained functions, Crash-prone
Recommended it? No

Before I begin let it be known I'm writing this review for someone with a moderate knowledge of TCP/IP Networking. If you want to hear me wax poetic about software bundles and how pretty the manual is - sorry you're reading the wrong review.

I have just purchased an new Dell PC and ordered their router with it. They supply Belkin routers and when I connected my two PC's together (old one running Windows 98 and the new one running Windows 2000 Professional) everything worked. Although the set up was more difficult than I expected due to... Read full review »

DON'T BUY IT!

Pros cheap
Cons stops working when more than 3-4 connections are attempted
Recommended it? No

it stops working when more connections are tried. it is a waste of money. I bought Zyxel, given Belkin back and now I am happy - Zyxel works in stable way, but Belkin needed to be rebooted and computers reseted to get it working - a lot of problems and no way to run long connections to Internet... Pros Very easy setup, cheap, attractive, and a big money saver.
Cons Looks better in the picture.

The instructions that came with the router talks in detail about setting up a network to allow sharing of broadband. It seemed a lot to do, however, when I had plugged in the cables and turned my computer on, I didn't even have to install the software that came with the router, because both of my... Pros Easy to install. Came up smoothly in default settings.
Cons Had to update the firmware. Now OK

I'm using this with a Comcast cable BB connection.

Got it to be able to share the connection among multiple PC's. Impressed that it came up with no need to change any windows settings at all.

After a few days operation, I noticed a trend where sometimes the Internet access would... Read full review »
