Linksys (WRT54GC) Wireless Router: How A Home Network Saved My Marriage

Pros Easy to setup and use, inexpensive, works well
Cons None yet
Recommended it? Yes

I work from my home and have a good bit of work to do every evening. The drill was always the same; come home, go for my run, shower, eat, head into my office and be gone for a good hour or two. It drove my wife nuts and we never saw each other until around nine in the evening. I thought of... Read full review »

Not worth it!

Pros Worked normally for about a year.
Cons When product (inevitably) fails, customer service does anything but serve the customers.
Recommended it? No

It worked fine for a year, disconnecting at random intervals like all routers, but not too much.  Then the problems began.  One day out of the blue, it would connect locally, but not to the Internet, no matter how many times I reset it.  My ISP walked me through all the troubleshooting they could,... Looks like smooth sailing ahead with this router!

Pros Small, feature rich, low cost, does what it says it will: fast wireless connectivity
Cons External antenna not included
Recommended it? Yes

My laptop has been tied to the desk in the computer room for the last 2 years because I didn't own a wireless router. Friends would complain about how they couldn't connect to the internet from my guest room or the living room when they were visiting and I began to wish I had a wireless connection,... My SMC Barricade Router finally gave up suddenly during the middle of the day. I was thrust into the decision-making shopping for a new router. Wow it is amazing how much has changed in 3 years!

There are a number of excellent choices available now. I had never been too happy with the SMC... Read full review »

Feels a little flimsy, but does what it advertises

bywzph Nov 5, 2005

Pros Small, fast, easy to install
Cons You'll need an antenna if you want to leave the room.
Recommended it? Yes

This is a handy little router. I use it in my home office, and it's fast.

If you're a Mac user, like me, be advised that the security set-up is different from an Airport. With the Airport, you put in a password, and that's that. With this unit, you generate a WEP key from a passphrase... Read full review »

A very cute router for the feminine side in you (if you are male)

Pros Its very small and compact. Its very solid and stable. Its stackable.
Cons No external antenna...affects range. Lights very close together - hard to distinguish...

After failing to have a Hawking router (HWR54G: see my review of it) work as my main router I decided to give this one a try when seeing it was on sale for $20 after rebate at Staples and reading a lot of positive reviews on it.

The first thing I noticed about this unit is that it is... Read full review »

Pros Little box with big abilities, easy to set up and use, and works well.
Cons Wish the optional external antenna came with it - just in case.
Recommended it? Yes

A newcomer to the ever expanding world of wireless technology, I was apprehensive about purchasing a wireless broadband router. I read up on this new fangled stuff, researched the available products, and resolved to purchase the Linksys WRT54GC.

It attracted me because:

Don't use the set up disk included!

Pros small footprint
Cons so far none

To set up just go to Linksys' site and use their easy link advisor set up to install. Much easier than the outdated disk that comes with this router. Read full review »

WRT54GC is incompatible with OpenWRT

bydajhorn May 21, 2006
3 Helpfuls 4 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Very small, very low power requirements, looks good, inexpensive.
Cons Incompatible with OpenWRT. No bridging or advanced networking features.
Recommended it? Yes

I bought the WRT54GC expecting that it would be similar to other Linksys WRT54 products, but it is based on vxworks and incompatible with OpenWRT and other WRT54 firmware enhancements.

I returned my WRT54GC because it is incompatible with OpenWRT, but most people would be happy with it. Read full review »

Good all around...so far

bynmaycher Jul 16, 2006

Pros low cost, easy setup, WPA2 security, good transfer rates/no connection problems
Cons updating firmware a problem, small antenna = smaller range, external antenna expensive
Recommended it? Yes

Overview
Well one of the key reasons I bought this router were the generally positive reviews here and around the web (especially compared with other low end routers). I wanted something newer and most of the other "G" routers have been around for a while. I found the review over at Tom's... Read full review »
