Got my money's worth

Pros Price, numerous features, Compaq name
Cons Somewhat heavy by today's standards, battery life not what I expected.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Unless you're a techno-geek that has to own the ultimate in power and speed, this computer will certainly do the job and then some.
I purchased this notebook after a fair amount of research and assessment of what I actually needed. This computer will be used mainly for surfing the Net, a few games, and several normal applications(such as databases, spreadsheets, etc.). I'm not planning on running my entire business on it, and therefore don't need the fastest, most powerful machine out there.

With its Celeron 2.0 Ghz, 256 MB RAM, and 40 GB HD, this machine handles anything I will ever throw at it. I upgraded the memory to 512 MB, but in truth, that was really not a necessity since I had no problems with the original 256 MB. The DVD/CD-RW works several times faster than my eMachines desktop, and I now do all of my burning on this laptop. There are two USB ports, and my only wish was that they were 2.0 instead of 1.1, but all in all, not that big of a deal.

The 15" TFT display looks great, with no distortion, but the built-in speakers are somewhat poor. The touchpad has a little bit of what I call bleed-over, where the scrolling part of the pad sometimes is active near the edge of the regular pad area. This is the first laptop/notebook I've owned since the mid-nineties, so maybe this is a common characteristic with other touchpads. A very slight annoyance at best. The keyboard feels solid, and all parts of this machine fit nice and tight, with no wiggle or play.

The OS is Windows XP Home, and although its not a perfect OS, I wouldn't downgrade my rating because of it. I guess I'm just not one of the many Microsoft-haters out there. lol

The battery life is a little disappointing. The battery meter on the taskbar is helpful, but it's like the gas gauge my vehicle; once it gets below half, it seems to drain rather quickly.

Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase. It's not at the top end of what's available, but as stated before, it more-than-adequately serves its purpose.
