A mapping GPS receiver and a FRS / GMRS 2-way radio in a single small, rugged, waterproof (submersible) device would seem like a traveler's dream. But does it realize its potential in practical use? The short answer is "yes, for the most part."

This review will first focus on the two key... Read full review »

Pros Battery life, GPS accuracy, features, concept
Cons Radio is simply useless. Not exaggerating.
Recommended it? No

GPS is great.

Radio has caused me lots of troubles. On first hunting trip, nobody could hear me, I thought the radio was crap, it was nearly a year old and I didn't have the receipt, but I called Garmin and they agreed to fix it. I sent it in, and they said there was glue blocking the mic... Read full review »

Pros light weight.Waterproof.fairly easy to use
Cons color
Recommended it? Yes

I bought the 110 for hunting and hiking. I wasn't interested in the 120 due to cost and features i would never use. The 110 frs radio is pretty good. I can communicate with my buddy easily although we didn't test the range over 1 km.I chose the American version of the RINO because GMRS radio... Read full review »

Garmin Rino 120

Pros Great functions, very good sattelite reception, waterproof.
Cons Click stick too small, awkward somewhat bulky shape.
Recommended it? Yes

This is an excellent unit for the hunter or avid outdoorsman! It picks up and holds onto sattelites better than most units I have seen. I've had about 5 different GPS's over the last few years and this is the coolest and best functioning one for sure. I have not had the chance to test the radio... Read full review »

Two way comms and GPS for fishing - WOW!

Pros Location sending, FRS/GMRS two-way radio, size, durability
Cons Battery life and power button placement
Recommended it? Yes

Garmin has been an industry leader in Global Positioning Service (GPS) for a long time. There really are only two at the retail, everyday consumer level that provide GPS, Garmin and Magellan. Now, Garmin has added two-way radio features to their latest line of eTrex style units.

A great concept in its second generation

Pros Awesome concept, great execution, seamless radio/GPS interface.
Cons Legendary Garmin crappy GPS reception. Little memory for custom maps.
Recommended it? Yes

My other reviews on GPSs focus on Magellans, which I consider to be a superior product with better satellite signal processing. That said, the Garmin Rhino 120 has won me over with the basic concept. A FRS/GMRS radio with dozens of great features and a robust GPS system is an excellent idea.

Good GPS, lousy radio.

10 Helpfuls 11 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Good GPS function, convenient size for hunting/hiking.
Cons Poor radio function. Very limited compatibility with other mapping and Topo software.
Recommended it? No

Bought this unit with a friend to use for hunting. I wish I had read some reviews first. We found that after a somewhat steep learning curve, the GPS functions were pretty good. The only GPS issue we had any trouble with was occasional signal loss because of terrain. The functionality of the... Read full review »

If the Garmin Rino were sold on late night TV infomercials, the sales pitch would go something like this:

"Lost in the woods? Can't find your friends? No more tricky smoke signals, no more expensive flares! Stop using that soggy paper map and no more hoarse throats from shouting through the... Read full review »

Pros Easy for any age to use. Stay in contact with your kids by using display.
Cons Battery life short. Use battery saver feature and turn volume down to extend life.
Recommended it? Yes

I own both the Rino 110 and Rino 120. Both models are light weight, easy to use and are PACKED with extra features that I did not expect. The Rino 120 has extra memory for more detailed mapping and memory. I live in Southern Utah and spend most if not all of my extra time hiking and riding through... Read full review »

Great GPS, Worthless Radio

Pros GPS, Battery Life
Cons The Radio, Cost
Recommended it? No

The GPS in this unit works great. But then this is a Garmin unit, that is what they do... The internal 8MB of storage is enough for most of the maps I have used. The battery life is good compared to other units I have used. (my Garmin 195 eats battery's like you've never seen)
