Gretsch Electromatic G5120 Hollow Body: Plays Great, But Careful With The Sound

bybuffoonery Feb 5, 2008
42 Helpfuls 43 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Competitively priced, comfortable and easy to play
Cons Pickups were a little muddy
Recommended it? No

Gretsch has a well-deserved reputation as a manufacturer of great electrics that were essential to the sound of early rock and roll. It's hard to imagine rockabilly without somebody playing a Gretsch, even if the most famous Gretsch player is a guy who played rockabilly nearly twenty years after... Read full review »

Gretsch enters the big leagues of guitar sales

byjefhatfield Nov 27, 2011

Pros Price, price, price.
Cons The Bigsby B60 may not stay in tune up to modern expectations.
Recommended it? Yes

Guitar Center/Musicians Friend is the Wal Mart of guitar stores, and whatever sales well here bodes well for the guitar maker who sells at this mega-chain. Of course, Gibson, Fender, Martin, Takamine, and Ibanez all do well here.

But did anybody know that Gretsch has the 5120 as a top... Read full review »

Pros Beautiful, excellent quality, great sound and feel. Low price.
Cons None.
Recommended it? Yes

I am a very experienced guitarist (former pro). Having owned the Gretsch G5120 for some months now, I can easily say that I just love it. I bought this guitar for only $500 at my local Guitar Center. As far as I am concerned, this instrument is an instant classic. The tone, feel and quality are... Read full review »

POOR SOUND. DO NOT BUY

byjjbbgg Mar 29, 2012

Pros Good looking, great action, solid construction.
Cons Horrible sound; not evident if playing alone.
Recommended it? No

I bought this guitar from Guitar Center, Columbus, OH, 5 months ago. Yesterday I traded it in, losing a few hundred in the process. As of now (March 2012), Guitar Center does not sell any new g5120, and they have *A LOT* of used g5120s. That alone tells the story.

When I purchased mine last... Read full review »

Cool Guitar with a few quick mods

byscottb630 Jul 1, 2008
7 Helpfuls 8 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Workmanship, Great neck, Bigsby that stays in tune, plain cool!
Cons Stock hardware can be improved on (see my write up here).
Recommended it? Yes

See previous reviews for all the default hardware etc.
Here are a few suggestions to really make a 5120 sing.
1) Install TV Jones Pickups (I used the Power'Tron in the Bridge position and the Super'Tron neck model, ). A little Dremmel work may needed to get a perfect fit.
2) 2-way... Read full review »

I liked it in the store wanting a hollow body. Gretsch has a great reputation with their lower end line in the

Electromatics are manufactured in Korea and China and soon maybe Indonesia. They produce quality guitars.

By solid I mean the Gretsch has a 1 ply top to say Corts 3 ply... Read full review »

Very Impressive for the money!!!!!

bydan_6-strings Jan 4, 2012
1 Helpfuls 2 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Affordable high quality finish and comfortable playability seated or slung no awkwardness.
Cons The tuners are lacking stability if you are a tremelo-bar user, loses tuning rather easily.
Recommended it? Yes

The body is light and finely finished the coloring is brilliant for an off shore built unit, not blotchy like some others. The neck is thin, narrow, truely smooth running even for those with shorter fingers like me, and it has very easy access to higher frets. I played an orange... Read full review »

Blast from the past

Pros its affordable, sounds great, plays great
Cons not as twangy as the upper hollwood models.
Recommended it? Yes

Well the saying is “your guitar is only as good as the person who plays it". This guitar has the sound your looking for, I played the signature series and found there to be little difference. For the bang for the buck this guitar plays like butter. You get the twang for the jamming solos and... Read full review »
