The Bottom Line:
Save your money on this unit, and buy a good quality unit or a whole house filter for your central home unit.
I bought this unit to put in my small home office, 8x8, to keep dust down and eliminate my smoking odors.
The unit was fairly cheap, $60 at Walmart, and it had an ionizer built in, so I bought it.
Needless to say, I didnt expect much from a small unit, and its a good thing.
The unit has two small squirrel cage type blowers that filter a very small amount of air. Barely adequate for an 8x8 room.
The filter is large and is pleated with a "carbon" prefilter. I say carbon, but it looks like black plastic to me.
The filter is just sitting in a loose cavity in the front interior of the machine, and the seal is not adequate to prevent air from by-passing the filter. End result, circulation of dusty air.
As far as the "ionizer" is concerned, thats the biggest problem. The ionizer is 4 simple nails in one side of the blower. I say one side, because the other side has none, missing 50% of the air flow.
But, I do have to say that the ionizer does work as advertised. It charges the particles emitted from the unit, including any dust or smoke that by-passes the filter.
And here lies the problem. Those charged particles float around the room and will no doubt look for an opposite charge to attach to. Maybe it will be the filter on the return trip.
But unfortunatily, it will probably find an opposit charge on your drapes, walls, carpet, desk,..... You get the picture.
My walls are a mess near this machine!
So, it doesnt solve my problem, but it created another.
