Sure we can do that, boss!
Pros
Virtually any server can run CF. Very easy to learn. Uses familiar 'tag' structure.
Cons
Studio only available for Windows (any text editor will work, however)
Recommended it?
Yes
That's what you say when they want to take your business online.
Even if you know nothing about Web Design or how to interactively post your databases over the Net, just smile and say "no problem"!
Why would I give you such crazy advice? Because you have a secret weapon! Cold Fusion!
This tool will turn you from a novice to a web expert in no time! Already familiar with Internet development? Then you will be amazed at how easy Cold Fusion can make your job. This reviewer has come from a background in CGI/ASAPI programming, and let me tell you, I'm embarrassed at what used to pass for Internet applications. Cold Fusion has opened the doors to TRUE interaction with the client.
There literally is NOTHING you can't do with this tool. From simple guestbooks to complex shopping carts, and everything in between. If you ever find a need for something that doesn't ship with the product, a HUGE archive of third-party addons is available online, or, if you're also an accomplished C++ or Delphi developer, you can create your own!
Cold Fusion is often compared to Microsoft Active Server Pages. So, what are the differences? At the end of the day, both products can pretty much do the same thing, however, CF will always be EASIER then ASP. Why? ...because CF uses the familiar "tag" structure of HTML while ASP utilizes VBScript which was never really designed for either the web or serious database interaction. In short, what you can do in a couple of CF tags, will take upwards of 25 lines of hard to read/debug code. Yech!
Also, ASP only works with Microsoft IIS running on NT/2000. (you can 'hack' it to work under linux, messy!)
CF will work on NT,2000,Linux,Solaris. CF also supports load-balancing.
