When it works, its great

Pros Strong signal, strong security, strong user controls (when it works)
Cons One grows weary of repetitive rebooting (when it doesn't work)
Recommended it? Yes

I have a love/hate relationship with the MR814. Yes, I realize its an inanimate object, yet the promise of it is tempered by the performance.

Why I love it
Wireless signal I have a small network in my house. The MR814 sits in my living room attached by cable to 2 desktops. Another... Read full review »

Cons Some nice-to-have configuration options are absent

Preamble

To be clear, I own, and am reviewing, the MR814v2. Netgear differentiates between the original MR814 model (aka the "MR814v1"), and the newer MR814 model, the "MR814v2". Most (if not all) vendors fail to differentiate between these two models clearly, but if you see the model... Read full review »

Terrible support, long hold times, difficult setup, waste of time

Pros Fairly easy setup, cheap
Cons Cheaply made, connectivity issues, constant resets, unskilled tech support, not...

I've had PROBLEMS with this one since day one.

Sure, it was a good deal, but it's been a massive waste of my time. And here I am spending more time out of my day - after having just called Netgear support - to warn YOU not to buy this brand. LinkSys seems to have a LOT more reliability... Read full review »

Great little router

Pros Reliable router, never drops the signal
Cons Horrible tech support, pain to set up, old technology
Recommended it? No

I have owned this router for three years now with few problems. I run a small office with this router, a few wired PC's, a printer & several wireless desktops and notebooks. It rarely drops a connection and is always connected at 11mbps.

I know some have complained about this router... Read full review »

Go for it! As long as you like slow.

Pros cheap
Cons Slow wireless, Bad configuration options, Annoying
Recommended it? No

This little router is the cheapest around! But cheap is not even close to being good. This thing goes at a sub standard 11 MBPS (Standard being 54 MBPS). If it was any slower I would recommend burning the packets to floppies and carrying them back and forth. Granted it is not that bad if you use... Read full review »

Gather ye round the campfire, folks, and I'll play you a little tune, and tell you a story about a quartet of routers. Because there is a story here, and you're going to have to sit through it.

The world is turning into a wireless place, and much as I am loathe to admit it I'm doing the... Read full review »

Cons Poor quality control. Atrocious tech support

Prior to buying the MR814v2 I used an MR314 for about 2 years, and was quite satisfied with it. Last month the MR314 failed (lost its wireless connection, but continued to provide service to hardwired computers) and it was time to get a new wireless router.

I got the MR14v2 at a local... Read full review »

NetGear MR814 - The only known disposable router.

Pros Easy setup and decent price.
Cons Poor quality product, short life span, false warranty and terrible support.

I purchased this router about six months ago for the low price of $60. The setup was easy and only took minutes to complete. There were many features on this router that you could not get anywhere else for the price, such as NAT, VPN, Firewall, 128-bit wireless encryption, etc. Having both wireless... Read full review »

I Bought a wireless Netgear Mr814 almost a year ago. After a couple of weeks of usage the wireless connection started to break up. Assuming i had interference from my unshielded TV cables, I hardwired ethernet connections to the router and everything worked fine. A couple of weeks ago I started to... Read full review »

Pros Inexpensive. Adequate performance. Simple browser interface.
Cons Limited range. Problems getting all parts to work.

I purchased the MR814 just over a year ago to extend the wired network in my office to include wireless and save having to plug in laptops using the RJ-45 jacks.

I found the Netgear router hard to set up, but most of this was trying to make it compatible with:
(a) an existing wired... Read full review »
