Pros Easy to use, good picture for the price.
Cons Low battery life.

The Sony DCR-TRV 350 (from now on called the 350 in this review) is a camcorder you can most certainly rely on for your home footage needs whatever the subject. Pros Great camera with loads of features for a low price.
Cons LCD display kills the battery quickly.

Last spring my wife and I collected a very handsome return from Uncle Sam for the previous year and we decided to spend it all on ourselves for a change (as opposed to paying off credit cards, bills and the like). My wife bought herself a Plymouth Voyager (used of course) and I sent my sights on a... Read full review »

The super-duper-not-going-to-break-the-budget-camera-for-all-purposes.

Pros Convert analog to digital. Great picture. Very low motor noise.
Cons Heavy, power hungry, and 8mm can only store 1 hour of digital per tape.
Recommended it? Yes

I'm no videophile. Sure, I refuse to use analog cable and have a DVR built into my satelite receiver. I have a computer hooked up to my living room TV because I like to play games and music videos on it. I even have my TV hooked up to my stereo so that all my video sources can be played through it... Great Camera for the Money

bycelesteandbob Nov 1, 2003

Pros 20x optical zoom, plays 8mm analog tapes, fair price, it's digital, good color,...
Cons No 16:9 steadyshot, heavy and bulky, video not as sharp as some higher Mega-pixel models
Recommended it? Yes

I was looking for a new camera to upgrade from my old Sony 8mm analog camcorder, and my primary concern was the quality of video in the 16:9 mode. I also thought that if the camera worked out, it would be convenient to play back my old analog tapes with this camcorder connected to my PC and then... Read full review »

Pros 20X Optical Zoom, Analog inputs, passthrough, backward compatible
Cons Battery life, Must use screen to adjust camera settings, Bottom loading and tripod mount
Recommended it? Yes

As a parent, I have a collection of tapes that include VHS and 8MM that I wanted to convert to DVD. This camcorder is backward compatible with the 8MM tapes, and the digital passthrough feature makes migrating the VHS tapes a snap. It is also equipped with earphone as well as an external microphone... Read full review »

A Great Backup Video Camera

bylaubacht Dec 6, 2007
6 Helpfuls 7 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Very inexpensive, good quality, easy to use, feels solid, easy computer connection.
Cons 8mm Tapes hard to find, cameras hard to find new, tripod blocks tape release.
Recommended it? Yes

I own two of these models, both as backups for my HD camcorder. I've been shooting broadcast quality footage on both of these cameras for several years without any major issues. The Digital 8mm format is hard to find, but is dirt cheap. I've purchased lots of over 50 tapes on Ebay, brand new Sony,... Read full review »

Pros Easy to use, good price
Cons No memory stick or tape included

Also considered Canon zr60. Consumer reports review introduced us to this Sony and we went with their recommendation due to the reliability measures of Sony versus Canon.

Hesitated a little over the fact that it was D8 rather than miniDV. Went w/ this one because we never really want to... Read full review »

Pros Sony quality, ease of use. No manual even needed for basic use
Cons Battery life a little low but acceptable as for its' use.

I have been using this for a couple of years now and it is a great, solid, easy to use camcorder. Its large array of a/v jacks should keep it useful for years to come. While the HI8
format is less popular than mini DV, it works fine for me. Read full review »
