The Bottom Line:
With prices of Dreamcasts and their games going down.. This is another sure thing.
Ok, I have always loved Spiderman. I mean what a cool character! He ranks right up there with Batman (the comic book one mind you) and Spawn. If you are a Spidey fan, you will not be let down.
Graphics 9/10
Superb graphics are the main attraction for most gamers on Spiderman. The graphics are true to form for most comic book lovers. Crisp and clean as a whistle, this is a true visual feast. I was expecting a bit rough and choppy graphics, but was pleasantly surprised. Top-notch here guys and gals.
Sound 10/10
The audio in this game is one of the best I have ever experienced. Now don't go expecting cutting edge synthesized bleeps and pops, and unreleased tracks from Moby... Just pretend your comic book could talk, and you will see why I gave it 10/10. As most of you know, Spiderman is hilarious. The witty one-liners and the sarcasm are carried over brilliantly. Sound effects are good though... Even the BGM (back ground music) is well composed. It's just that the voice-overs are so great, and the little things are so awesome, it overrides everything else.
Gameplay 8/10
Gameplay is a mixed bag of emotions for me. I believe most would have given it a bit less. I guess I have been caught up in the moment that I was actually the web slinging web crawler. The basics of gameplay consist of Spidey and his regular antics, plus a few added bonuses. You can swing on a web to reach other destinations, shoot your web to "freeze" baddies and two added extra features. One you can create a web dome... This shields attacks from the bad guys. The second new feature is a modified web attack. It like a big ball of web and really knocks the baddies flat. Also, in order to really succeed in this game you have to master using your web to speed you up. You can grab walls and have it catapult you to the end. Very helpful.
The storyline in Spiderman is compelling and fun. It plays out like a comic book. And with the narration of STAN LEE, you know it is authentic.
Replay Value 5/10
This truly hurts my game. Very disappointing. The game is very short. I would estimate that in under 10 hours the game was over. Very easy to beat. Sure, I might play it again, but it just won't be the same. I was so intrigued by the storyline, that it just wouldn?t cut it.
Overall 8/10
Spidey would have gotten a perfect "10" if it was for a few things they would have done. First if they would have made the game longer, or added another feature in, it would have gained one more point. It would have gotten another point if they would have put in the best loved villain of all times... JUGGERNAUT! No Juggy! How sad. Other than that, all of the regular baddies are here. All the authentic Spidey stuff is too. If you are a fan of Spiderman, this is a true win/win game for you. If you are a casual player, rent it first and see what you think. I think you will love it.
