Spiderman for PlayStation 1

Pros Great graphics and sound - Stan Lee himself narrates
Cons Controls can be awkward, Camera angles a little funky
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Spiderman is a solid action game title that will thrill fans of the comic, as well as gamers.
Note: Just so that there is no confusion, this review is of the Spiderman game for PlayStation 1, and it came out over a year before the new Spider-Man movie was released. There is a new Spider-Man game for PlayStation 2, but this review is of an older one.

Spiderman for PlayStation is one of those truly original games that you can?t help but enjoy. It starts out with an imposter, dressed as Spiderman, stealing technology from a huge press conference. Peter Parker (the real Spiderman) was there taking pictures, and he begins his quest to find out who the imposter is and why they are setting him up. As the game moves along, you will meet many of the characters from the Spiderman comics, and you will find that these are your only friends. Not only must you fight off the evil goons who are working against you, but you also must run from the police.

Graphics: 8/10

The graphics in this game are excellent by PlayStation standards. Animation is fluid and the large buildings come into view nicely as you are swinging between them. The bosses are oversized and have unique moves, which add to the atmosphere of the game. The only complaint I have is that the camera angles can sometimes get a little distorted if you get stuck in a tight place. I have run into several occasions where I lose sight of Spiderman, and that?s not good.

Sound: 9/10

The sound is top-notch, and even features narration by Stan Lee, the creator of Spiderman, X-Men, and nearly all the mainstream super heroes. In-game sound is great, and the sound effects are excellent. I did find some of the voice acting to be a little rushed and unnatural at times, but I suppose this is to keep the game?s pace moving along quickly.

Controls: 6/10

The controls in Spiderman take a little bit to get used to, but you will adjust quickly. You can jump, punch, kick, or shoot your web with the buttons. To swing from something, you jump then press L2 and hope you have a place to land your web string. One thing that some people may not like is that Spiderman moves pretty slowly when on foot. I find myself often pushing really hard on the directional controls just because I want him to hurry.

The camera moves with Spiderman, and it sometimes gives you points of view that aren?t quite optimal. If you quickly move around, the camera angles will usually readjust themselves. When you are crawling along a wall or ceiling, I have found that movement is a little strange. You will move in whatever direction you are pointing, and it?s easy to get turned around when you move from a horizontal to a vertical position.

Overall: 7/10

Like most level-based games, you can only save after completing a full level. I have found some levels to be a bit tedious, therefore making save points time-consuming to reach. This doesn?t really take away from the enjoyment of the game, but pushes you to complete a level so that you don?t have to reply some of the harder parts again. One good thing is that you can save before and after fights with bosses, so that you don?t have to go through a whole level again if you lose the fight with a boss character.

All in all, this is a solid arcade-style action game with lots of features. Spiderman fans will love it because it follows the storylines and features so many of the comic book characters. Action/adventure game fans will love the quick-moving story and the varied degrees of action.
