Our second label, RED C, is made predominantly from grapes grown at the Young Family Vineyard in Napa Valley, just south of St. Helena. Like Covenant, RED C is made from 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The blend includes some of the barrels from Covenant that don't make it into our premier bottling, but that still show excellent character and finesse. Because RED C includes a bit of press wine, it remains in barrels for an extended period and is released some 6 months later than Covenant. CLIMATE CHARACTERISTICS: The climate of Spring Mountain is unique. Early spring frosts are unlikely due to cold air moving down the slopes to the valley below. Fog often covers the valley while the Spring Mountain District is above the fog layer. Therefore maximum daytime temperature is reached an hour earlier than the valley. Then cooling begins earlier with shade is created by the sun’s gradual decent to the west. Cooling breezes from the Pacific Ocean also contribute to the late afternoon cooling. The minimum daily temperature is usually reached in the early evening. Temperatures then warm at night when the cool air settles down in the valley floor. It's not surprising that wine made from Grace clone grapes grown at Chotsie and Alan Blank's 1.8 acre vineyard in Rutherford shows similarities of style to wine made from our own vineyard in Saint Helena. Smooth, firm tannins give an elegant supple texture that frames a graceful and harmonious whole.
