Portable Storage - Backup Your Stuff!
Right now your data is vulnerable. Not to cyber-terrorists, not to viruses, but to time and unforeseen circumstance. If you’re like 90% of America, you haven’t been backing up your data as often as you should be. Don’t be afraid, don’t be ashamed. It’s as easy as a quick jaunt over to Best Buy to remedy your issue.
Portable storage is a great way to keep your precious files (music, photos, software, videos) backed up for ages to come. And while it’s not a total solution (a total solution would be having backups of your data at home AND at a different off-site location) it’s a good place to start to secure your media. I’m a big fan of Western Digital hard drives. I haven’t had one fail on me yet, they have a cool aesthetic, and you can get them in massive sizes (terabyte and higher). Newer Western Digital drives also support USB 3.0, and anybody that’s used this new standard can tell you that it’s blazing fast. I’m talking transfer rates 10x USB 2.0 in my experience so far. USB 3.0 is starting to become more prevalent in Windows machines, but for Mac users, you’re going to have to wait for Thunderbolt equipped drives to start hitting the market. Thunderbolt is a new competing high speed transfer port that Apple is backing in a big way. In fact, in-spite of the fact Thunderbolt accessories are sparse to non-existent in the current market, the latest model Macbook Pro sports a Thunderbolt port that’s just begging to be used. Leave it to Apple to start yet another format/standard war.
So when you hit the store looking for a portable drive, make sure you take into account the ports it supports. You’re going to want to go with something that’s compatible with one of the new standards. I’d also stray away from buying cheap, off-brand portable hard drives. Unreliable drives lead to data loss. It should be said that recovering data off of a failed hard drive is super expensive, so don’t cheap out on bad brands. I trust Western Digital, Segate, and LaCie. You should also buy drives in the terabyte range to future proof your purchase. As pictures and movies become high and higher fidelity, their file sizes also increase greatly. Not to mention, as digital media starts becoming more and more accessible online, you’re going to be downloading a lot more data and you’re going to need space to store it all.
Backing up your data regularly should be a way of life. Digital media has made our lives far and away easier, but don't forget that losing media for good is easier too. Pick yourself up a portable hard drive and insure your digital lifestyle will survive well into you and your family's future.
