Best Hair Smoothing Products for Thick and Unruly Hair

You can stop envying the women with fine, pin-straight hair, now, oh ladies of thick and unruly locks. If the humidity has you dealing with fly aways or your last razored haircut (to thin your tresses) have left you with frizzy or puffy hair, you need to tame your coiff! Use these top products for smoothing hair, from shampoo to hair spray and everything in between.

Using too many products can leave even the cleanest hair looking drab and oily. When your hair is naturally thick and porous and you want to smooth it out, you will need to try a variety of products and combinations to find what works best for you. Your hair may also respond differently when you travel, or when you live in an area with dramatic seasonal changes. Alter your hair car routine to accomodate these changes.

  1.  Try a smoothing shampoo.
  2. Add a smoothing conditioner from the same product line.
  3. Apply a hair smoothing lotion before drying and styling the hair.
  4. Learn how to dry your hair to make it as straight and smooth as possible. Book an appointment with your favorite stylist and ask for a the straight, smooth look you want. Watch how the style is done and mimic it at home.
  5. Use a gloss or finalizing smoother lightly to avoid a greasy look.

Start with Shampoo

Try Paul Mitchell Smoothing Super Skinny shampoo. This hair cleaner is mild enough for daily use. Ask your local stylist for a free sample before buying, to see if you like it.

Cheap and Effective

Another shampoo to help you start taming your hair is Herbal Essences None of Your Frizziness Shampoo. This product works amazingly well and can be found in any local store.

Straight and Less Pouf

Unless you're going for the Snooki look, de-pouf your hair with Herbal Essences Dangerously Straight Pin Straight Shampoo. The results are different than what you will find with the smoothing shampoo, yet both are effective in their own way. If your thick hair looks puffy, try this. Your hair will even look a little longer because it will lay flatter.

Get the Treatment

The daily treatment is the Paul Mitchell conditioner to accompany the Super Skinny shampoo. Use them together, use them separate and find out which product helps your hair.

Serum Can't be Beat

This is one of the best products for smoothing hair, ever. Start with a dime size amount and work it into damp hair. If you have thick hair or long hair, you will need more than that. Be careful not to use too much around your bangs, part or directly on your scalp in the front of your hair. It can look greasy if you accidentally get a glob into your bangs, or in any short layers near your face. Work it into the long strands of your hair first, upside down and then rub the excess left on your hands into the front of the hair for best results.

This product can also be used lightly after hair is dry and styled. Use it tame any stray hair, or as a touch up later in the day.

Dry It Smoothly

Help your dry more smoothly with the right hair dryer.

Cream for Smoothness

If you don't care for the slick feel of the Paul Mitchell serum, try a leave-in cream for smoothing hair. This is the companion product that goes with the None of Your Frizziness shampoo and conditioners. It can be used effectively within its product line, or with other shampoos and conditioners. It's creamy and lightweight and incredibly affordable. It's also an effective de-tangler for thick hair.
